HLAF interns of the Jail Decongestion Program interviewed Quezon City Jail Female Dormitory, one of the interviewees was a pregnant PDL who testify the real situation behind bars mirrors the current condition of most jails in the Philippines, according to the convict being imprisoned is not easy and comfortable with unborn babies the only thing they can do is to wait for their freedom and trust in God.
Jails facilities, perinatal and maternal health care for incarcerated women is given for free, and they have access to the urgent need of medical assistance, they also, provide them medication complete Vitamins, supplements, and healthy meals, but the only thing that is not provided for free are the essentials of the newborn it must be covered by the family, however, to those who are unable meet the needs of the child the jail will cover all the child necessities.
Childbearing women like her are not neglected inside jails they have the freedom in terms of their health by monitoring their weekly and monthly check-up, they are not obligated to do choirs and heavy work also, and wardens and jail officers is always attentive to them in case of emergency like sudden abdominal pain the interviewed PDL will undergo cesarian section delivery due to sensitive pregnancy and miss position of the child inside the womb, now she is currently in a state of bed rest.
“I always asking myself if I can do it, I can get through it, I want to focus on the positive side and every time I overthink, I try to sleep and pray for my family and hope that everything will be okay”
It’s sad to think but this is the reality and face of a mother in prison, they had no control over how long they can be with their child, and all pain, emotional burden, and fear are constantly experienced by these women apprehended with criminal charges. Person Deprived of Liberty like them should be given more attention by the government to support their needs since not all prisoners in the country had the same opportunity to the experienced right treatment.
