HLAF FEU PolSci – Intern
Humanitarian Legal Assistance Foundation conducted an interview with the paralegal trainees of Cebu City Jail – Female Dormitory. The goal is to know what the female PDLs feel as a paralegal inside the jail. “It is an opportunity” – said one of them. It feels like they are law students because of the bunch of information they are gaining in every training. It was even suggested to make it longer, considering the advantages it gives to the PDLs and their cases. In addition, one of them also shared their frustration with some PDLs that still do not have a lawyer to represent them. HLAF was pleased to not leave these PDLs as the foundation gives legal aid and assistance that is beneficial to the processes of their cases. “Baka Naman estudyante pa lang – at kapag lawyer na kayo hindi na ninyo pinapansin ito ha?” – said one of the worried PDL.
Paralegal training provided by HLAF as one of their advocacies serves as a hope for these PDLs. Because of this initiative, their cases are given attention compared to when this training is not yet present. According to the female PDLs, the foundation is able and confidently help most especially in their queries and concerns regarding the legal procedures, and for PDLs who want to find provisions. Moreover, these paralegals tend to free their co-PDLs because of their assistance and series of follow-ups. it made them feel good whenever they helped their co-PDLs inside the dormitory. In addition, it also helps the PDLs in terms of their mental and emotional health. “Yung confidence ko na-boost ko siya parang dati kasi tahimik lang ako” – they will be able to talk to their co-PDLs, not just in sharing their problems and concerns, but also knowledge. These PDLs are getting confident and courageous. Before they are afraid whenever they get a call for a hearing, they are anxious about what are they supposed to say and ask, but thanks to HLAF, this foundation made them feel the opposite way around.
