The impact of the Paralegal Training has been beneficial in accordance with the interviewed Jail Officers. Their feeling of letting the PDLs to learn, to participate in trainings, and several sessions of activities has been sorted out to what are the challenges that they can determine that the families of PDLs, and the PDLs themselves may face.
One main concern is the occurrence of COVID19, the Jail Officers feared what may happen to the PDLs as they have no endorsement wherein their concerns are catered with reservation. The access of the PDLs to their hearings, trials, etc. has been limited as it is done through online conferences. The Jail Officers only adheres to the given court calendar which encapsulates the schedules of hearings, and trials—when this occurs, the personal laptops of the personnel are being used for the PDLs to attend their scheduled hearing.
To lessen the worries of the PDLs, the Jail Officers’ initiative to conduct a “kumustahan” session somehow helped to address the concerns regarding their cases, which will be convened to their attorneys, or loved ones to let them know what they are feeling inside the jail.
It is definite that the Jail Officers are open to help the PDLs, especially if it means to follow up their cases, and to relay a message towards the families of the PDLs. There are reservations with the assistances of the Jail Officers, they are still making sure that there are boundaries, and they will breach the security of jail.
The Jail Officer accentuates that HLAF has been an impactful institution as the mentoring session of the PDLs show great results, it is empowered in several angles, as the PDLs are able to reach out and to learn more about their case. With this program, the paralegal officers also undergo a program called Paralegal Edge, wherein the paralegal officers relay their concerns with the dorm they handle.
The interview was a wholesome one. There are numerous exchanges of dialogues with the PDLs, they are highly appreciative with the treatment they received while serving their time—when they are freed, they sent out letters to jail officers as a sign of gratitude.
Undeniably, humanity still exists. The “friendship” that was established inside the jail is known to be reserved, but it is to believed that it is pure and genuine.
