Valenzuela City Jail PDLs get free Case Consultations

HLAF, together with PLV Social Work interns and an FEU law student volunteer, conducted case consultations and follow-ups with male and female persons deprived of liberty (PDLs), especially those who lacked familial support to manage their cases effectively in Valenzuela City Jail Male and Female dormitory, on September 10, 2024.

The consultation began with a moving prayer led by the PDLs, who expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the concern and attention they were receiving. The session was skillfully facilitated by HLAF’s Jail Decongestion Program Officer, Mr. Juanito Vinluan.

The involvement of social work interns from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela and a law intern from Far Eastern University added significant value, enhancing both the efficiency and effectiveness of the consultation process.

The consultation was further supported by jail officers, including SJO1 Ernauza M. Manosur, JO1 Nico Aparta, and Warden SINSP Nelia Gomez-Macaraeg (Valenzuela City Jail Female dorm), who provided essential information such as case and branch numbers, which was vital for ensuring a smooth and productive discussion, and ensured correct information being provided also by PDLs themselves.

During HLAF’s visits to Valenzuela City Jail, HLAF saw that many PDLs lack the necessary knowledge or resources to effectively manage their legal cases on their own, especially in the absence of supportive family members.

With this, HLAF ensured that in its visits these PDLs receive the legal guidance they need to understand their rights, navigate complex legal processes, and make informed decisions regarding their cases.

A total of twenty-five (25) PDLs participated in the session, actively engaging and benefiting from the support offered. To further improve their comfort, HLAF donated two electric fans to BJMP Valenzuela, which greatly contributed to the well-being of the PDLs during their time at the facility.
